Miuccia Prada was born Maria Bianchi in Milan on 10 May 1948. She took the name Miuccia Prada in the 1980s after being adopted by an aunt. She graduated with a degree in political science from the University of Milan in 1971 and later obtained a PhD in political science from the same university in 1978. She also studied acting at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan and performed as a mime artist for five years. During the 1970s, she was a member of the Italian Communist Party and involved in the women's rights movement.

Prada entered her family's luxury leather bag business in the mid-1970s, initially overseeing accessory design. In 1978, she met her future husband and business partner, Patrizio Bertelli. Her first successful handbag design was a line of black, finely-woven nylon handbags in 1985. She introduced her first women's ready-to-wear collection in 1989, her first menswear line in 1995, and the Miu Miu line in 1992. Under her leadership, the company acquired Jil Sander, Helmut Lang, and shoemaker Church & Co. In 2002, she opened her own contemporary art museum.
