Donatella Francesca Versace was born on 2 May 1955 in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, the youngest of four children. Her father, Antonio, worked in the family coal business, while her mother, Francesca, was a seamstress who later opened her own boutique. Her older sister Tina died at age 12 from a tetanus infection that was improperly treated. Donatella was especially close to her brother Gianni, who convinced her to dye her hair blonde at 11 in tribute to singer Patty Pravo, a favorite of his. She studied literature and languages in Florence in the mid-1970s, commuting to Milan on weekends to work with Gianni at the Callaghan label, though her mother disapproved and made surprise visits to check on her.

Donatella always knew she wanted a career in fashion, saying she could not imagine doing anything else. In 1976, she and her brother Santo joined Gianni in Milan. The three traveled to the United States in 1977 for three weeks to find press and overseas buyers before launching the Versace brand. The company was founded in 1978, with Donatella as vice president. She worked with Gianni on all projects, focusing on styling, brand image, and designing accessories, shoes, and handbags. In 1982, she won an auction for the palazzo at Via Gesù 12 in Milan, which became Versace’s headquarters and showroom. She is seen as both Gianni’s creative partner and his muse. In 1989, Gianni dedicated the Blonde perfume to her and gave her control of the Versus diffusion line, along with a yellow diamond ring. During Gianni’s recovery from ear cancer in 1996 and early 1997, Donatella handled much of the brand’s decision-making.

Her design approach relies on images rather than direct observation of clothes. She worked with photographer Richard Avedon on the Spring-Summer 1980 campaign, his first for Versace, and later art-directed his Spring-Summer 1993 campaign. After Gianni was murdered on 15 July 1997 outside the Versace Mansion in Miami, the family, including Donatella, retreated to a private Caribbean resort. Gianni’s will left 30% of the company to Santo and 50% to Donatella’s daughter, Allegra. Donatella inherited a portion and became creative director. On 18 July 1998, she staged her first haute couture show for the Versace Atelier at the Hôtel Ritz Paris, building the runway over the hotel’s swimming pool with sheer glass, as Gianni had done. From October 2002 to January 2

Reader's Guide

Donatella Versace's significance lies in her role as both creative partner and muse to her brother Gianni, and later as the steward of the Versace brand after his murder in 1997. She is widely credited, alongside Gianni, for the supermodel phenomenon of the 1990s by casting editorial models on the runway. Her first haute couture show as creative director, held at the Hôtel Ritz Paris in July 1998, built a runway over the swimming pool using sheer glass. She designed advertising campaigns featuring major celebrities and created the iconic green 'Jungle-Dress' worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys, which spurred the creation of Google Images. She also designed the Palazzo Versace Australia resort and played a major role in the Palazzo Versace Dubai. After nearly 28 years as CEO, she announced her departure in March 2025. Her legacy includes numerous awards, such as the 2017 Fashion Icon of the Year from the British Fashion Council and the 2018 International CFDA Award. She has been parodied in media and portrayed by Penélope Cruz in American Crime Story. Her personal struggles, including an 18-year cocaine addiction that ended in 2005, are part of her public narrative.
